Pelini Lab Salt Project

Over the past few weeks, members of the Pelini Lab have been going through a variety of samples collected from agricultural sites around Bowling Green as part of a preliminary investigation into how invertebrates present in these areas may be sodium limited. Our central hypothesis is that low-level Na enrichment of croplands will increase crop production and decrease P losses that cause eutrophication because soil invertebrates and microbe characteristics (e.g., biomass, activity levels, community composition) that affect P immobilization, mineralization, plant uptake, and leaching or runoff are currently constrained by low Na availability in the Lake Erie Basin.
